Forget swine flu 2009, remember Y2K?

Pivoting to position my story within the context of the Y2K scenario fixes a few key problems with my project. For one, it forces the audience to reflect on the unintended consequences of our technology usage. Remember how scared everyone was?? Second it brings into focus the casual prepper, which in that time was basically everyone. I was much more interested in the casual prepper anyhow. Third, it gives me a much more interesting group of objects to work with. Though 1999 is only 10 years prior to my original 2009 scenario, a number of key consumer technologies emerged in that time, including the iPod, many video game consoles, Facebook, widely used email services, web browsers, the transition to cloud-based services. Remembering and re-imagining the world before all that will be more interesting to me.
